Battery Storage Systems for your home

Installing a battery alongside your solar panels is a fantastic way to turbo-charge the efficiency of your residential solar project and reduce the payback time. A battery system stores any excess electricity generated by your Solar PV array so it’s ready to use when you really need it.

As our domestic electrical demands are generally far lower during daylight hours, much of the electricity that our solar panels generate can end up being exported straight to the grid. SEG payments will ensure that we are being paid for this exported electricity not as much as your electrical provider will charge you to sell it back to you when you need it in the evening. With a battery system installed alongside your solar PV system, electricity that your solar panels generate, that is not being used to run the home, will be stored in the battery, ready to use at your leisure.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Installing solar panels can be beneficial in many ways. From providing you with free electricity for large parts of the year and greatly reducing your household bills as a result to increasing your property’s value and lowering your carbon footprint, solar pv panels are definitely a good investment. Moreover, the price of installing solar panels (and battery storage system) has reduced dramatically since they gained popularity, due to more competition in the marketplace and mass production. The UK is actually a good place to install solar pv, particularly in the south, but still effective anywhere throughout the British Isles. Solar panels generate electricity using light, not heat and they don’t need direct sunshine in order to generate electricity. • We will survey all roofs and run the data through our software to ascertain that your pitched roof is able to withstand the additional weight that solar panels will add to its load. For flat roofs, it’s a little more complicated, but we will design the mounting system and provide all the additional weight bearing data to a structural engineer who will then advise as to whether or not the roof is adequate and if not, what could be done to ensure that it is. Nothing is left to chance and all surveys are backed up with full installation data and calculations.

  • Depending on your electrical use and the size of your roof. As a general rule for most residential properties, we would always advise to get as much solar on the roof as possible, but we think that as little as 1.5kW of generation (as few as 4 panels), if orientated correctly would be enough to make a big dent in your electricity bills.

  • Yes and no. Domestic solar panels will essentially self-clean in the rain and with no moving parts there’s very little that can go wrong with them. On the other hand, the cables and other parts of the installation such as bird blockers are subjected to the elements and can be susceptible to damage over the year, so it is worth keeping an eye on them. One of the arrays we have has been operating for over 13 years and has literally never been looked at since it was installed…and it’s still generating electricity every day… keep an eye on the panels to make sure that no debris is building up on them and no cables are waving in the wind, but if you are in any doubt or you have an older installation that you are not too sure about, just give us a call and we’ll be happy to give the installation a once over.

  • Yes, all our installations are MCS approved, and you will be able to qualify to receive what are known as SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) payments from your electricity provider. The amount paid has recently improved greatly due to market competition and you can now get paid in excess of 15p per kWh of exported electricity. We think that you are still better off storing the energy that you generate in a battery storage system because you still don’t get paid as much for exporting power to the grid as you do to buy electricity back again when you need it.

  • For most pitched roof installations where the property is not listed or within the confines of a conservation area and where the solar panels do not protrude above the ridge, no planning permission is required. Flat roof installations currently require planning permission as technically the entire solar installation would be above the ridge, but we have never had planning permission denied. Where you are in a conservation area or the property is listed, planning permission should be applied for and approved before installation can take place.

  • Quite simply a battery storage system stores electricity either from generation by solar panels, or directly from the grid. In short, you can store electricity that you produce yourself for use later on, or you may decide to buy electricity overnight using a reduced rate tariff, for use later on in the day, during peak hours, thereby greatly reducing your electricity bills.

  • Ideally, a battery storage system should be installed in a non-inhabited room, such as a garage or outhouse. Many battery systems are rated to be installed outdoors. Regulation has recently been introduced in the form of PAS63100:2024 advising that battery systems should no longer be installed in loft spaces or escape routes. We will survey your property and advise where a battery can best be situated for you.

  • Contrary to popular belief you do not need solar panels to benefit from a battery storage system, although the two complement each other beautifully. A battery storage system stores electric energy. It does not care where the electricity comes from, so will quite happily store energy purchased from the grid. But why would you want to do that? In a bid to level out daytime and nighttime electrical consumption, off-peak tariffs are now available to encourage battery storage system owners to fill up their batteries by buying electricity overnight, so that they do not have to buy it during the day. This takes pressure off the grid to provide so much power during peak usage times and benefits battery storage system owners by allowing them to buy electricity at a reduced price. This set-up works particularly well for electric vehicle owners as they are able to attract even cheaper off-peak electricity prices, as low as 7.5p per kWh in some cases, allowing them to fully charge their batteries for a fraction of the cost of peak time electricity. If you want to know more about how owning an electric vehicle can benefit your solar and battery installation and reduce your payback time just give us a call and we’ll be glad to tell you more.

  • Modern-day battery storage systems are safer than ever. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) is a type of Lithium-ion battery that uses Iron Phosphate as a cathode. This type of battery is safer, requires no maintenance and has a better charge and discharge rate than any other battery configurations. If you are wondering what a lithium-ion battery is and whether or not it is safe, then think about what’s been powering our mobile phones since the early 1990s.

  • Solar panels are guaranteed for a minimum of 25 years, allowing for a degradation to around 80% of their initial output after that time.

Battery storage systems are usually guaranteed for a minimum of 10 years, if installed by qualified technicians.

Solar and battery inverters are usually guaranteed for a minimum of 5 years, if installed by qualified technicians.

All of our installations are further covered by a two-year workmanship warranty which guarantees the installation is undertaken to the highest professional standards.
