EV Charger Installations In Flats and Apartments

Help your residents make the switch to driving electric and talk to Green Generation Electrical Ltd about installing an EV charging solution tailor made for your apartment block.

Electric Vehicle Charging In Flats and Apartments

Electric vehicles have arrived. Many of us have already made the switch to driving one and countless more people are expected to do likewise over the coming years.

As more electric vehicles hit our streets the need for an adequate public charging infrastructure continues to grow. However, companies that own and operate public charger networks regularly charge astronomical rates for charging.

Electric Vehicle owners with driveways at home have been taking advantage of the convenience and huge cost benefit of home charging for many years, often paying a mere fraction of the price that EV charging operators routinely demand . Only relatively recently has this started to become a reality for residents of flats and apartments and installing EV chargers in car parks for apartment block and flats is now one of the largest areas for growth in this industry.

New blocks of flats must have electric vehicle charging facilities included in their design but retrofitting EV chargers into existing apartment complexes can be disruptive and costly.

The good news is that there are grants of up to £30,000 available to assist with the installation of the chargers and the infrastucture work that is required to faciliate them. Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes you can. From single chargers for individual residents of apartmements to large-scale installations covering entire residential car parks. Grants are also available for a range of installations for residents and owners of flats. Click here for more information on grants for flats.

  • The cost of charging will vary depending on how your apartments chargers are set up and who has autonomy over seting the charging costs. Many residents of smaller blocks have their EV charger connected directly to their own electrical installation so they only pay whatever their electricity tariff is. In larger blocks this is often not possible and a more centralised approach is necessary. In this case, the cost of a charge session is usually set by the management company and would be roughly the same as the cost of the electricity tariff, with usually a small amount added on to cover maintenance and servicing costs of the charger network.

  • Charge times would vary according to many factors: the capacity of the incoming electricity supply cables, the amount of vehicles charging simultaneously and even the maximum charging rate of the vehicle in question. Most chargers in flats would have to supply a minimum of 3.5kW per hour charging speed, but it's more likely that you'd be charging a lot faster than that, with speeds of up to 22kW per hour achievable with properly configuired three phase electrical supply.

  • There are many different grants currently available for residents of flats. From single, individually owned charge point grants to large scale infrastructure grants for managed multiple point EV charger networks . Click here to visit our grants page and find out which grants would be relevant to you. If you need any more information, contact us and we will let you know what you may be eligible for.

  • You don’t need to inform your energy provider that you are installing an Electric Vehicle Charger, however you will probably want to tell them so you can get a cheaper charging tariff. It is however, necessary to inform the District Network Operator (DNO) who are responsible for the upkeep of your local electrical network. But don’t worry, as we will do that for you! It’s all part of the service!

  • Yes. Private individuals and operators of larger EV charger networks in flats and businesses can allow the general public access to their EV chargers. With back office solutions recommended by us, owners and operators of EV chargers will be able to set tiered charging costs for different categories of users meaning that you can set higher charging costs for the general public than are applicable to yourself or your residents. Chargers can also be locked to the general public, for all or part of the day / night and car park management companies can ticket vehicles that are not charging or have overstayed their charging session. Its really up to you how you organise your chargers.
